Background

The Prince Edward Island Environmental Network (Eco-Net, PEIEN) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental network of groups working to improve the environment. The organization was originally formed in 1991 and was formally incorporated as a co-operative in 2000.

The PEI Eco-Net is non-advocacy and thus does not take stands on particular issues. Instead, the Eco-Net helps each member group satisfy its mandate through the sharing of information and through provision of administrative and technical support. The PEI Eco-Net is affiliated with ten other Environmental Networks, as well as national organizations such as the Sierra Club of Canada. The groups all come together under the umbrella of the Canadian Environmental Network (CEN) based in Ottawa.

The PEI Eco-Net office in Charlottetown produces a weekly environmental news summary as well as a quarterly newsletter when financially achievable. The office also acts as a point of access to federal, provincial and community programs and provides information for member organizations about new and innovative initiatives in the ENGO and government sectors. The staff is able to recommend people who are active and informed with respect to particular issues, so that the most effective individual can be sent to provide a solid environmental perspective at government and industry consultations.

The office is located conveniently in the Royalty Centre in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Open all day, everyday, the public is most welcome to drop in. Appointments to meet with the Executive Director can be made by calling 566-4170.
